Bank statement PDF to Xero
Xero's bank statement import is one of the more forgiving in accounting software, but it still needs a real CSV. Feed conversion work, historical periods and unsupported banks all end up going through manual import.

Importing into Xero
Open the bank account, choose Manage Account then Import a Statement, upload the CSV, and map the columns to Date, Description and Amount. Save the mapping as a template and every later import from the same bank takes seconds.
Date format matters
Xero asks you to declare the date format during import. Match it to the export exactly. A mismatch here is the single most common reason an import appears to succeed but places transactions in the wrong month.
Reconciling after import
Imported statement lines land in the Reconcile tab and behave like feed lines: Xero suggests matches against invoices and bills, and bank rules apply automatically. Set up rules before a large historical import and most of the categorising happens on the way in.
Multi-currency accounts
Import each currency into its own Xero bank account. Converted statements keep currencies separate, so nothing gets blended into a single misleading total.
Frequently asked questions
+What CSV columns does Xero need?
At minimum a date, a description and an amount. A single signed amount column works, and Xero can also take separate debit and credit columns.
+Can Xero import a PDF statement?
No, Xero has no PDF import. The statement has to be converted to CSV first.
+Will bank rules apply to imported lines?
Yes, imported statement lines go through the same reconcile flow as feed lines, so rules apply.
